There are always people
looking for a haunted property, and those looking to sell a haunted house.
One of the obstacles to finding such a home is that each state has different
laws regulating what needs to be disclosed about a property. You may be
aware that, for example, if a
murder was committed on site it needs to be disclosed to all potential buyers.
Some states had laws requiring that if a house had a commonly known
reputation in the area for being haunted, that had to be disclosed.
Some of these states have actually changed that ruling in the last decade or
two. In Massachusetts the law is basically "don't ask, don't tell." If
you specifically ask the selling agent about paranormal activity they have to
tell you if they know of any. Of course, the seller may have
conveniently forgotten to mention it to them, so you may want your agent to find
out some information from the seller. This is more of an issue if you
don't want any uninvited guests in your home after you move in.
If you are looking to buy a
haunted house, you need to let your realtor know. For the reasons
discussed
in the paragraph above, it may not be easy to identify houses in your area that
are haunted unless they have had some publicity. Your agent may need to do some
discreet investigation. It is also worth reminding you that you want an
agent who is openminded and that you feel comfortable with in setting such
unusual requirements. You also will probably need to be patient - these
homes will be difficult to scout out and finding one may take a long time.
